More free security tools for your PC

In a world where businesses are falling by the wayside, I’m alway aked why I give away free info on how to fix your PC yourself. I guess the main reason is that I’ rather work on the more complicated things, then just simple stuff all the time. It also allows me the chance to give something back to future cutomers. Those same people that come to me with questions often leave knowing a bit more about what caused their issue, and in most cases readily refer other people to me. I guess it’s just another form of marketing, and it is well worth it to me in oth the long an short term.

As PC users, it’s almost inevitable to avoid problems related to spyware, Malware, and viruses. I guess you could avoid them by never using the internet, but lets be realistic here. That’s not going to happen. If it did, then you wouldn’t be reading this anyway.

By nature, we as humans are pretty curious about stuff, and occasionally click on a link, or download a program that we really don’t know anything about. While most sites out there are safe, there are a few that aren’t, and this is when the problems begin. One simple click, and your computer can be opened up to a host of virus’s, maleware, spyware, and more. It’s just that simple. These programs can cause a lot of issues, ranging from system performance issues, to data loss. A 2009 study conducted on behalf of the National Cyber Security Alliance shows that 58% of people have, or know someone that has had a computer virus. These numbers aren’t getting any smaller.

So what can you do about this problem? Well, start off with a good defense, such as a firewall and anti-virus. Most of the bigger names do a good job. Symantec, Trendmicro, and Kaspersky, to name a few. These aren’t free, but they make an incredible difference in stopping the threats, before the become a problem. It’s important to know that there isn’t really a program out there that can stop every threat. The threat is constantly evolving, and it’s impossible to catch them all before problems arise.

Two programs that are often used by consumers that are free, are, Hijackthis, and Super-anti Spyware.

For those of you willing to put in the effort, Hijackthis will give you the tools needed to find most maleware problems, registry errors, and virus’s that are activly running on your system. It takes a bit of savy, but all the tools are right there, and it’s pretty straight forward interface. Superantispyware, will run on your PC, and look for know spyware programs that are running on your system, and give you the option to fix the problems after the scan. Both are invaluable to troubleshooting your PC, before you end up having to call a tecnician to fix the problem for you.
